Our Service and the Council Pledges

In delivering the grounds maintenance service to the residents, businesses and communities of Salford, the grounds maintenance services makes a significant contribution to five of the 7 Salford City Council Pledges:

Pledge 1

Better education for all

By the maintenance of high standards of sports facilities in parks, recreation grounds and schools and through the maintenance of the city’s green space and play areas, we assist in the physical education of the people of Salford.

Schools have an obligation to their pupils to provide suitable facilities, which promote physical and mental development.  A safe and efficient grounds maintenance service contributes to this.

Pledge 3

A clean and healthy city

The grounds maintenance service has responsibility for litter collection on both hard and soft landscaped areas across the city and waste disposal from the allotments and clearance of void properties across the city.

Well maintained green spaces have a vital role in promoting healthy living and preventing illness by providing places for walking, cycling and other physical activities.

Well maintained green spaces can contribute to the physical and psychological health of the citizens of Salford.  Free access to good quality green space enables people to take exercise.  Thirty minutes a day of gentle exercise can significantly reduce the risk of strokes, coronary heart disease, currently the leading cause of death in England, as well as reducing stress, which is the biggest cause of lost days at work.

Pledge 4

A safer Salford

The grounds maintenance service continuously makes a positive contribution to this pledge. Recent examples include:

Hodge Lane, Salford – an initiative carried out with the Community Safety Team has resulted in a £25,000 landscaping scheme to reduce crime and the fear of crime in this area.

Pledge 5

Stronger Communities

Through the continuing development of the Green Directory, communities will now have the opportunity to participate in how the grounds maintenance service is delivered.

Pledge 6

Support for Young People

The grounds maintenance service currently provides a seven day inspection of all play areas, improving the safety and quality of this provision.
