Tree Warden Scheme
The Tree Warden Scheme is a national initiative to enable people to play an active role in conserving and enhancing their local trees and woods.
The scheme was founded, and is coordinated by the Tree Council in partnership with its sponsors - the National Grid Company, which has a well-established policy of community involvement and environmental care.
Tree wardens are volunteers, appointed by parish councils or other community organisations, who gather information about their local trees, get involved in local tree matters and encourage local projects to do with trees.
Since the scheme’s launch in September 1990, the Tree Council has been working closely with local authorities to set up Tree Warden Networks throughout the UK. There are now over 8,000 Voluntary Tree Wardens nationwide.
Salford’s Tree Wardens
A Voluntary Tree Warden Scheme was established in the Worsley area of the city as long ago as the autumn of 1992, up to 6 wardens at any one time were involved in the scheme.
Achievements have included, a tree survey of Roe Green, woodland maintenance, tree planting schemes, and general consultations regarding tree matters.
In early 2004 it was proposed to re-launch the scheme and the team of 3 will be expanded to 6 at the re-launch on on 14th July 2004. The increase in volunteers will help the scheme to expand into a variety of new areas, which will not only raise the profile of the scheme but also raise public awareness about trees in general, and their value and place in the local environment.
