Local history in libraries
Although the main collection of local history material for Salford is held at Salford Local History Library, based at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, there is still a wealth of local history information based in libraries around the city.
All libraries have some books of local interest. In addition:
- Broughton, Little Hulton, Swinton and Worsley Village libraries have small local history collections. As well as books for loan there are copies of photographs, maps and pamphlets.
- Cadishead Library has a local history display which is maintained by members of the Irlam and Cadishead Local History Group.
- Height Library has a display of local scenes in the foyer.
- Irlam Library has a collection of maps, photographs and microfilm of The Irlam and Cadishead Guardian from 1920 to 1984.
- Little Hulton Library has copies of local interest pamphlets and photographs.
The library catalogue has a special section on local history (once in the catalogue, change the Collection to Local History), and there is even a dedicated Subject Index to Salford Local History on the Advanced Search page.
Photocopies and laser-print copies of maps, photographs and other material of local interest can be provided on request, subject to copyright.
There are many internet sites (the most popular of which is Ancestry.com) dealing with local history, which can of course be accessed free of charge on our public access internet computers.
