Online reference sources

Online reference sources

We subscribe to a wide variety of online reference sources and you don't even need to be in a library to use most of them! All you need is your eight-digit library card number to login.

These sites are accessible free of charge for Salford library members from any computer connected to the Internet. Ancestry.com is only free from library computers.

For access to Encyclopedia Britannica Online, please select from the following links:

  • For ages 5 to 11
    Britannica Online Junior edition
  • For ages 12 to 18
    Britannica Online Student edition
  • For ages 18 and over
    Britannica Online edition

For the Oxford and Grove sites please type SAL in front of your eight-digit library card number into the login box (eg SAL00123456).

For KnowUK and NewsUK please type your eight-digit library card number into the login box (eg 00123456), then select Salford City Council from the drop down list.

  • KnowUK collects information from over 100 of the most widely used reference publications in the UK, and you can search all of them at the same time.
  • NewsUK collects content from 68 national and regional newspapers, and also contains articles from magazines and journals.
  • Ancestry.com contains invaluable information if you are researching your family history. If you are using a library computer you have free access to the site, but you'll need your own subscription to use the site from your home computer.

There are computers for public use in all Salford libraries.
