LifeTimes - Salford's Story

Lily Elsie

Telling the fascinating story of Salford over the last 200 years and focusing on real people and real events, LifeTimes offers an opportunity to celebrate the city's past and predict the future.

LifeTimes brings the history of Salford to life and charts the history of the whole of the city - from Cadishead to Charlestown, from Walkden to Winton and from Pendlebury to Pendleton - as seen through the eyes of Salford's people, old and young.

Through LifeTimes we aim to:

  • Involve as many people as possible in collecting and enjoying the city's heritage
  • Help document the life of the city today and in the future
  • Develop centres of excellence at Salford Museum, Salford Local History Library and Ordsall Hall
  • Help develop and support groups around the city to celebrate the city's heritage

Visitors to the LifeTimes Gallery at Salford Museum and Art Gallery are able to explore and experience Salford's social and industrial heritage through its changing exhibition programme. The LifeTimes exhibitions are family-friendly and include a lively mix of artefacts, exhibits and hands-on activities.

The LifeTimes Oral History Archive is a collection of recorded personal memories from people who have lived and worked in the city over the last 80 years. There are now over 200 recordings in the collection.

To keep up to date on the LifeTimes project and to explore Salford's history further read our LifeTimes Link magazine.

This work and the LifeTimes Gallery at Salford Museum won a national Interpret Britain Award in 2002 in recognition of excellence in promoting and interpreting the city's history.
