Liverpool Road is changing!

With £500 million of private and public investment planned Liverpool Road really is changing. The Liverpool Road Strategy 2007-17 sets out a vision for making the corridor a vibrant and well connected place to live, work and visit. This is about generating over 1,000 jobs. It means reducing the number of vacant buildings and empty shop units. It means a new school for 1,000 pupils.

The first three year action plan 2008/11 is showing real results. £86 million of investment from both the public and private sectors has already started to make a difference with more underway in 2011/12.

1.2 kilometres of street scene have been upgraded with a further 1.05 kilometres being improved in 2011. 33 building fronts have already been improved with traders reporting increased custom. The momentum is building with a new stadium, new schools, new housing, improved parks and fitness. All these changes are really starting to reshape and revitalise Liverpool Road.

Liverpool Road Corridor Strategy and Action Plan 2007-2017

Liverpool Road Corridor runs for six miles from the city boundary at Cadishead to Eccles town centre. The corridor, an important route between Warrington and Manchester, has a variety of shops and businesses and houses as well as green space and agricultural land.

In its early days the corridor was very vibrant, home to major employers and thriving shops. The decline of traditional industries, changes in shopping habits and increasing busy roads have led to the decline in many parts of the corridor. The corridor still plays an important role in the lives of local communities in the area. For many people travelling through every day the corridor is their only window on Salford.

The Liverpool Road Corridor Strategy is a ten year plan which sets out how the council and its partners will tackle this decline, making the area a more vibrant. In 2007 local residents, community representatives and businesses were asked about improvements they wanted to see along Liverpool Road. People wanted:

• better roads and pavements
• a safe and pleasant environment
• more support for local business
• improvements to parking and public transport
• employment for local people

The strategy has three key objectives:

• to support a series of vibrant places, with their own specific function, identities and connection to their communities
• to promote enterprise and business growth, meeting the demands of local communities and visitors, and brings employment opportunities
• to ensure the connectivity in and around the corridor and promote environmentally sustainable modes of transport
