Streetscene improvements in Cadishead and Patricroft
Street scene is improving as part of a wider package of investment. The Marge and Steel art work at Glazebrook roundabout (2007) heralded the way for a range of investment. In 2009 1.2 kilometres of road was resurfaced between New Moss Road and Fir Street in Cadishead with 11 trees planted.
Regular planting along 8 kilometres of the corridor with colourful floral borders, barrier and lamp post baskets brightens up the area every year. In 2010 trainees with the Clean Team West cleaned up 12 unsightly spots along the road.
Further improvements were made in 2011. These coordinated with building front improvements, investment in schools and the Irlam Station Strategy. The streetscene proposals were designed to help create an attractive image of the area supporting the local shopping areas, provide a pedestrian friendly environment and improve conditions for cyclists and local traffic.
Streetscene in Patricroft
A key section of Liverpool Road in Patricroft between Nelson Street and Milton Street was improved in 2011. Following public consultation:
- the pedestrian crossing at Lewis Street has been improved with a wide, raised plateau
- landscaping around the bus stop at Shakespeare Crescent has been redesigned, including six new trees planted
- new on-street parking bays have been created
Streetscene in Cadishead
Access to the new Irlam and Cadishead College and Irlam station was improved in 2011, including new signals at the junction of Station Road and Liverpool Road, a new pedestrian crossing, resurfacing Station Road and replacing street lighting. These improvements were jointly funded by the Building Schools for the Future programme, Irlam and Cadishead Community Committee and the Salford West Strategic Regeneration Framework budgets.
Small-scale environmental improvements were made to the streetscene in Cadishead centre. This included repair and replacement of existing bollards and litter bins.
Previous proposals for wider streetscene works in Cadishead were not progressed as a majority of people who took part in the consultation raised significant concerns and objections to the draft proposals, particularly to the suggested removal of the traffic lights at Brinell Drive junction.
The city council is working with local people in Irlam and Cadishead to agree an approach to traffic management and streetscene which will allow new projects to be designed.
