LIVIA site history

Agecroft Power Station

The site still suffers from its industrial past. There are many visible signs of what has been left behind.

These include colliery workings, a former power station, lost manufacturing, a derelict canal, a disused sewage works, abandoned railway sidings and landfill sites.

More recently, and probably partly because of this long-term neglect, the site has started to suffer from fly tipping, off-road motor biking and stolen, abandoned and burnt out vehicles.

Despite these problems the site has many outstanding assets. It has considerable existing tree cover and many landscape features. From key viewpoints in the valley it is possible to get long distance views to the Pennine Hills or across Manchester City Centre.

The site also links well with a number of other recreation routes along the valley, such as the Croal Irwell Valley Way, Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, the Irwell Sculpture Trail and the National Cycle route.
