Background

This course is jointly delivered with Connexions Salford.

When a young person reaches sixteen there are significant benefit and tax credit implications for parents and for the young person depending on whether they are still in education or training. They face a maze of complex rules and procedures when trying to establish a right to benefits.

Aims

To provide an up to date overview of the benefits, tax credits and allowances available to young people and their families

To develop your benefit advice skills to support a young person to move into further education, training or employment

  • Child tax credit and child benefit extension periods
  • Education maintenance allowances
  • Benefits for disabled young people
  • Income Support for 16/17 year olds
  • Jobseeker’s allowance and severe hardship payments
  • Benefits for care leavers
  • Activity and learning agreements

Suitable for

Personal advisers, youth offending teams, education, health, social care, housing, probation and any one who works with young people. You will have ideally completed the introduction to benefits course or have some working knowledge of the benefits system.
