Green to do list
Get involved to make your neighbourhood, Salford and the world in general a better and nicer place to live. Salford City Council are committed to doing everything we can to make improvements, here are some ways in which you can help too.
- Save your planet! Start with Salford. Take the climate pledge to help to make a difference.
- Make compost. Vegetable peelings, egg shells, paper towels – all sorts of things can go into your compost, reducing waste that goes to landfill and at the same time giving you super food for your garden. Find out top tips and how to get your hands on a reduced cost compost bin, a special offer for Salford residents.
- Be a ‘friend of the park’. Salford has lots of green space and local parks and if you can spare just a couple of hours each month you can help conserve and develop plants in these and keep them enjoyable for everyone.
- Take steps to improve your home’s energy efficiency. Find out more about easy ways to cut your bills, save energy and even if you are eligible for a grant to help insulate your home.
- Plant a tree, or two. With the help of Red Rose Forest, the local community and local businesses we are taking part in a project to help transform a large part of Greater Manchester, including Salford, into woodland. Find out how you can get involved.
- Car share! Good for the environment and good for your wallet. If half of UK motorists received a lift just one day each week, congestion and pollution would be reduced by 10% and traffic jams by 20%.
- Pop in to Princes Park garden centre. Part of a community scheme it sells plants, recycled, environmentally friendly and fair trade products. You can also have a cup of tea at Bizzie Lizzie café.
- Use your recycling bins. Salford is in the middle of the big recycling roll out with extensive doorstep recycling facilities being provided to help Salford be a sustainable city. The response from residents who have received their new bins has been fantastic. Find out more about the scheme and about what can be recycled.
- Dispose of all waste responsibly. Arrange collection for bulky items or find your nearest recycling or waste disposal centre.
- Clean up after your dog. It might not be a fun job but it is really important as not doing so can cause harm to others including children.
- Report fly tipping, littering and other anti-social behaviour.
- Organise a community clean up. All the tools you need can be loaned to you.
- Get involved and do a fun green activity. Find out about conservation days, wildflower planting, workshops and events.
