Personal Home Care

If you need help with personal home care (also called domiciliary care) such as getting in and out of bed, getting dressed and washing, we may be able to arrange help for you.

Personal homecare staff help you with the personal tasks you can't manage alone. This might be getting up in the morning, going to the toilet, washing or eating.

Whenever possible, staff will aim to support you at a time that suits you. However, this isn't always possible.

If you have recently lost some independence, perhaps because of illness or a return from hospital, the city council has a specialist services called Intermediate Home Support. This is similar to personal home care, but involves a lot of intensive support and rehabilitation for up to six weeks. Ideally at the end of this time, you will have regained all or nearly all your independence and will not need any more support.

Who provides the care?

If you contact us, we will offer you an assessment of your care needs. If we agree that personal homecare will help you, the first few weeks of care are provided by the city council's own home care staff. After six weeks, if you still need personal home care, staff from a registered organisation will start providing the care. You can find out more information about all the organisations from the Commission for Social Care Inspection.

You can contact homecare organisations directly and ask them to provide you with a service. All organisations must be registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection and you should ask to see a copy of their latest inspection report. You should only use an organisation you feel happy with and you may want to ask them questions about the care they provide. If you arrange care yourself you will have to pay the full costs of this care.

Standards

Each organisation will have slightly different standards that they aim to meet and you should ask for a copy of these. Generally, services works between 7.00am and 10.00pm every day of the year. There will be a team of staff supporting you, so you may not see the same person at each visit.

Other things to expect are:

  • To be left details of the support you will receive
  • Staff are polite and courteous to you
  • Staff treat you and your home with respect and dignity
  • Staff always show Identity badges
  • Staff let you know if they are going to be very late
  • Staff should never ask you for money

Each organisation should also have a complaints procedure which they tell you about.

How can I get services?

You can either contact homecare organisations directly or contact a Community, Health and Social Care office and ask for an assessment of your needs. If necessary, we will visit and discuss with you how we can best meet your needs.

Is there a choice of service providers?

There are a number of home care providers in Salford. All of the providers have to meet certain standards set by the Commission for Social Care Inspection.

Does the service cost?

Long term personal homecare does cost and the amount that you will have to pay depends on your income, savings and any disability related spending that you have. A charging assessor will contact you to arrange to visit and work out how much you will have to pay.

Are there alternatives?

Once you have been assessed as needing support, you can ask about direct payments. This is where we give you the cash equivalent of the cost of the care we would have arranged for you. You can then use this money to arrange your own care.
