Older people

If you're struggling at home, you should contact us to find out how we can help. There's a wide range of services and activities in your community, to help you to stay independent. Whenever possible, we’ll help you to live at home, or to stay in your community.
Some examples of the services we might offer are:
- disabled parking badges (blue badges)
- home care
- meals delivery
- equipment
- day care
- community support
Some of these services help you learn new ways of doing things at home. Other services help with the things that you can’t manage by yourself.
We can also put you in touch with other services – you’ll find some telephone number at the back of this leaflet if you want to contact them yourself.
- Helping Hands minor repair service
- low impact exercise sessions
- befriending groups
- dance clubs and social clubs
- luncheon clubs
- Care on Call mobile warden service
If you need a great deal of care and support and we can’t help you to live at home, you may need to think about other options such as residential or nursing care. You can also read ‘Finding and paying for a care home’ booklet by Help the Aged.
If you want things to do, you want to meet new people, or you want to find some support, you can asksid - our online searchable database.
What happens when you contact us
We’ll ask you some questions: your age; address; what things you are finding difficult to manage; if anyone helps care for you etc. We may then come and visit you to find out more information. We may also want to speak to anyone else who helps care for you, for example friends, relatives, other professionals or your doctor. This is called an assessment and it can take up to 28 days.
Can everyone get services?
We have to make sure that we arrange services for the people who need them most. If we assess you as being at critical, substantial or moderate risk, we can provide you with services. In general, the greater your need, the more services we’ll offer you. If we assess you as being at low risk, we’ll give you advice and suggest other organisations that may be able to help.
Paying for services
You will have to pay something towards the cost of services. How much you pay depends on how much service you get, how much money you have and what welfare benefits you get. We’ll explain all this and give you a leaflet to take away and read. If you do have to pay, we will tell you how much this will be first. You can cancel or reduce the services at this stage if you want.
Other ways of getting services
Direct payments
If we agree to support you with services, we can give you a direct payment - an agreed amount of money to spend on arranging, buying and managing your own care. If you would like more information contact the direct payments support workers on0161 789 8670.
Arranging your own care
You can contact a private care organisation directly if you want. Most private organisations will be happy to provide you with services, although they will charge you. You can still ask us for an assessment of your needs and use the information we give you, to plan what you want the private agency to do. All private care agencies should be registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection and you should ask to see their latest inspection report.
Making sure we get it right
All the care staff that you have dealings with should have been cleared to work with vulnerable people and any social care organisation you use must be registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection. We also have procedures to help keep you safe from possible abuse. If you are worried about some of the care you’re getting, you can contact the manager of the service or speak to our Customer Care Manager by phoning 0161 793 2233.
Helping us make services better
If you have ideas about how we can improve the quality of services we provide, we would love to hear from you. There are different groups that you can get involved with or you can contact our Customer Care Manager. You’ll find some numbers at the back of this leaflet.
