Caring for someone
Caring for carers
The city council and its partners provide and support a range of services for the estimated 20,000 carers in Salford, who are just 'getting on with it' and providing home support to a relative or friend who has a disability or long term illness.
You can find out about some of the activities and carers groups in city, by reading the Salford Carers Newsletter.
Salford Carers Centre organises a number of services itself and can also advise you about other support across the city and about your rights as a carer. By contacting the Carers Centre, you may be able to benefit from:
Emotional support
Social events
Short breaks
Benefits advice
Buddy and outreach service
Information, general advice and signposting
Regular free newsletter
Education and employment advice and support
All of the carers centres' services are independent, confidential and free of charge to carers of all ages and backgrounds across the city. Other services may involve a small change to some people. You can print off a simple flyer from the bottom of the page, telling you about the benefits of contacting the Carers Centre.

Did you know that you can ask Community, Health and Social Care for help?
If you are caring for someone and want support, contact us and ask for a carer's needs assessment. You may also want to ask the person you are caring for whether they will have an assessment of their needs. If you are not sure whether you want a carer's assessment, speak to the carers centre for advice.
Looking after yourself
All too often carers can be so preoccupied with the health and well-being of the person they are caring for, that their own needs take a back seat. Paying more attention to yourself can be beneficial for you which also benefits the person you care for.
Eating healthily - doesn't mean living on green beans and carrot juice. Eating as wide a variety of foods as you are able helps you to stay healthy.
A good night's sleep - don't feel guilty about snatching a few minutes or even hours, whenever you feel tired. If you need help sleeping, think about aromatherapy or reflexology.
Keep moving - you may feel tired, but regular moderate exercise will help to give you more energy. As a bonus, you'll sleep better too.
Looking after your emotional needs - when you are a carer, it often seems as if everything revolves around the person you care for. Share your problems with a friend, professional or anyone else you can trust.
