Multi Agency Working - Family Action

The Common Assessment Framework and Family Action Model
In order to prevent families from reaching a point of crisis we need to identify and provide the right services and support at the earliest opportunity. Prevention requires multi-agency working, family participation, and low-level family support services. With the family’s consent and co-operation the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) and multi-agency Family Action meetings (FAM) are the forum for planning the most appropriate intervention to meet the child/young person’s needs.
The Common Assessment Framework and Family Action process will:
- Identify, at the earliest opportunity, children, young people and their families experiencing difficulties and offer a system of help and support.
- Promote informed and active participation from children, young people and families throughout the process.
- Build on the inherent strengths and skills of children/young people and their families.
- Promote identification of appropriate services for children, young people and families.
- Identify and record gaps in service provision.
- Seek to reduce the number of children and young people entering services at the level, which requires safeguarding, and/or associated specialist services.
The Common Assessment Process in conjunction with the Family Action Model identifies the individual steps that should be taken from the moment there is a worry about a child or young person. When there is a concern regarding child protection, the Family Action Model will not be appropriate, therefore child protection procedures should be followed.
