Information for young offenders
As a young offender, an alternative way to address your behaviour is to hold a restorative justice meeting with the victim and the people who have been involved. A youth offending officer will carry out the meeting and ask you a series of questions about what happened.
During this meeting, you will find out how your behaviour has affected others and you have the chance to put things right.
To make restorative justice work, both you and the other people involved must genuinely want to take part and put things right.
Nathan had started drinking heavily and lost his job as a result. He had stolen alcohol from an off-licence and was caught by an off-duty policeman. As it was a first offence, a restorative justice meetings was held between Nathan and the shopkeeper, arranged by the Youth Offending team. Nathan apologised to the shopkeeper, admitted to his drink problem and agreed to get help. Without restorative justice, Nathan may have gone on to shoplift again resulting in a custodial sentence and his drink problem could have spiralled out of control.
