Day care for older people

Community, Health and Social Care runs four day care centres for older people in Salford. There are also some day centres run by different organisations. Before using a day centre, you will need to contact a social services office and ask for an assessment.

Our day centres offer you a safe, warm and friendly place where you can meet other people, enjoy a good meal and take part in a range of social activities. We can also help you with your personal care, for example helping you to enjoy a bath or have your hair done, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere.

Our varied, nutritious lunch menus are very popular with our members.

All our day centres are non-smoking

What kind of activities can you join in with?

Each centre has its own programme of weekly activities and you can choose whether to join in or not.

  • Exercise sessions, including Healthy Hips and Hearts
  • Healthy eating advice
  • Games to promote good movement
  • Beauty pampering sessions
  • Arts and crafts
  • Dance Classes

Activities include discussion groups, reminiscence sessions, quizzes, music and entertainment. You may fancy a game of bingo, dominoes, even to sit quietly or enjoy the company of the other members. Our day centres have computers linked to the Internet so if searching the “web” and developing your IT skills is what interests you then we can help.

Why not visit AskSID for on-line information about activities for older people?

What can you expect from the centre?

You can expect a friendly welcome from our trained staff who aim to give you a high quality service. Our staff have a wide range of knowledge of the caring profession and can offer guidance, information and practical assistance. Our aim is to give you as much independence and choice as we can and to provide you with as much help as you need. We hope to improve your quality of life.

How we work with you?

We aim to provide a welcoming atmosphere to everyone using our service. We aim to meet the needs of people from all cultural backgrounds and we are happy to discuss with you or your family any individual requests you have.

Helping us to make things better

We are very keen to make our service better and we need your help to do this. Each day centre has a user representative group which you can get involved with. The group meets regularly with staff, to let us know how we can improve the centre. You can also talk to staff directly, if you have comments, compliments or complaints.

If you are interested, we can also put you in touch with other groups who are working to improve services for older people.

You and your family or friends are welcome to visit our day centres to look around before becoming a member, as this will give you the chance to ask questions and meet the team.

What do you do if you are not happy with the service?

If you are not happy with the service, you should speak to the manager of the centre and discuss your dissatisfaction. If you are still not happy, there is a complaint procedure available to you and we would encourage you to contact our Customer Care Manager who is based at:

Crompton House
100 Chorley Road
Swinton

What other services are linked to the day centre?

The NHS provides some services in our centres:

  • Eye checks
  • Foot checks
  • Falls clinic
  • Flu vaccinations
  • Visits by Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPN)
  • Visits by your GP or District Nurses
  • The introductory session

We will give you information to help you get the most from the services we offer. We want you to ask as many questions as you wish about the service, so that you can make sure whether it is for you or not.

If you decide you wish to attend a centre, your social worker will write a Care Plan with you. This is an individual plan of your care saying what your needs are and what help you will receive. The Care Plan will also include a Risk Assessment which tells us what we need to do to make sure that we can provide you with services in a safe way.

Will you have to pay?

There is a small charge for day care. Once you decide to come to a centre, then we will be able to work out how much you will have to pay. You can also ask for a copy of our Charging for Community Care Services leaflet.

You will need to pay for drinks with cash whilst you are at the centre. Lunch vouchers for the midday meal at the centre can be purchased at your local Post Office.

How do you get to the centres?

Ask your social worker about the transport arrangements available to you or you can make your own arrangements to come by taxi or perhaps a relative or carer can escort you to the centre.

Community, Health and Social Care have a transport service which may be helpful to you.
