Mental health

If you are worried about your mental health, there are a wide range of services in Salford and the surrounding areas that may be able to support you.

Mental health social work services are provided through the Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.. Social workers are based in a variety of settings including Community Mental Health Teams, an Assertive outreach team and a rehabilitation service.

Social Workers are able to provide advice and assistance to people experiencing mental health difficulties on a variety of issues including assessment, care planning, counselling (including psychosocial therapies), hospital admission and community support.

You can find out more about how we assess your needs, how we meet your needs and how we check that your needs are being met - the Care Programme Approach.

Referrals to social workers can be discussed by contacting the duty officer of one of the community mental health teams.

Paying for services

We provide some services as part of a time-limited, total recovery programme designed to help you recover from your illness. We may have arranged care as follows:

Example 1
Arthur was recently bereaved and is struggling to cope without his partner. He is suffering from depression so his social worker recommended that he attend a day centre to attend counselling sessions, and learn new skills to assist his recovery. He attends 3 days per week for a variety of group and individual sessions. This is day care recommended as part of a total recovery programme. He will continue to attend until he is well enough to no longer need the service. He receives no other care or services from Social Services.

Example 2
John was recently discharged from hospital after a bout of severe depression. His Social Worker has arranged for a support worker to accompany him three times a week to take part in a variety of activities to help build his confidence and to assist recovery from his depression. This is mental health community support provided as part of a total recovery programme and will continue until John is well enough not to need it.

These are just a couple of examples of instances where we will not charge for services but it is impossible to cover every scenario. If you need further clarification on charging for Mental Health Services you should contact the Mental Health Social Work Team on (0161 789 5234). However we will still charge for other services, using the Charging system.
