Physical disability

Salford's Physical Disability Social Work Team works with adults aged 18-65 years who have a permanent physical disability or a brain injury caused by an accident or stroke.

We advise and support people with a permanent physical disability to live as independently as possible.

How to contact us
You can use the online enquiry form, or email, telephone, fax or visit us between 08.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Fridays.

If you contact us about getting help, we will ask you some questions about yourself or the person you are contacting us about. The duty worker will look into your situation and if necessary a social worker will visit you, to find out more information. This is called an assessment.

What happens next
The social worker will ask about your health, ability to carry out daily tasks and about support from friends and/or family. They will help you to think about social and educational activities as well as volunteering and employment opportunities. In some cases, with permission, they will contact other professionals that work with you, such as doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists to learn more about your needs.

If you have an unpaid carer helping to look after you, the social worker will also talk to them to offer them an assessment of their needs, as a carer.

After the assessment, the social worker will discuss with you how best to meet your needs. This will normally be about services to help you to live at home. Occasionally, the social worker may suggest looking at alternative housing, such as adapted housing or a care home.

Charges
Generally you will have to pay something towards the cost of any services that you use. You can find out more about the costs by reading our leaflets:

If you are receiving services to help you to live at home, then you may be interested in direct payments, which is where we give you money to buy your own care and support.
