You are not alone and don't have to put up with abuse. Domestic abuse amounts to a pattern of controlling behaviour, used to exert power and control over victims. It covers a range of abusive behaviour and does not just involve physical violence.
Domestic abuse can be financial, emotional, sexual and psychological, as well as physical, and the term covers forced marriage, too, where one or both of those involved does not consent to the marriage and there may be physical and emotional pressure on them to marry.
Most victims of domestic abuse are women and most abusers are men, but domestic abuse can affect people, irrespective of their gender, age, race, religion, sexuality and social class.
