Services to help you at home

Help at home isn’t only about home care and social services. Use the links on the left to find out about different services you may be able to use if you need some extra help at home.

If you wish, you can contact home care agencies directly and ask them to help you. You will need to be able to afford the fees. All agencies should be registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection, so ask to see inspection reports before buying any support.

Some services are only available to people who would be in danger without them – we make decisions based on our Fairer Access to Care policy. To find out which services you might be eligible for you will need to contact a social services office. Anyone can do this for you, with your permission.

What happens when you contact us?

If you contact us, we will offer you information and advice, put you in contact with other services or we may suggest an assessment of your needs.

If we agree that you need care services, we can either arrange them on your behalf or you may be interested in using a direct payment to arrange your own care.

Do services cost?

There is a charge for many services. There are number of simple ways to pay, depending on which services you use. If we arrange services on your behalf, we will normally offer to check that you are receiving all the benefits that you should be.

What about quality?

All social services (run by the city council, the voluntary sector or the private sector) have to meet minimum national standards and be registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection. You should ask to read the most recent CSCI inspection report which will give you an idea of the quality of care.
