Lift - transforming healthcare services in Salford

A gateway to council and lifestyle services

LIFT stands for Local Improvement Finance Trust.

It is a project which will transform the quality of healthcare and provide a gateway to city council and Primary Care Trust Services that Salford residents receive - at locations based throughout the city.

The background

In July 2000 central government published the NHS Plan, a ten-year plan for modernising and reforming the NHS. The plan identified an urgent need to improve primary care premises. At the same time, Salford City Council wanted better access to facilities for customers to use, and so a joint project was undertaken to build state-of-the-art facilities in the community, that would offer access to both council and health services.

Who is involved?

Salford is taking part in a LIFT partnership venture with Manchester and Trafford Healthcare. The partnership also includes the Department of Health, Salford Primary Care NHS Trust and Salford City Council.

What are they called?

While LIFT is the name of the overall NHS project, looking at tackling a number of modernising issues, these joint centres will be known as Gateway Centres; Gateway Eccles, Gateway Walkden, and Gateway Pendleton.

What does it mean for Salford people?

This will mean that people can visit the centres and use the library, attend healthcare appointments and get advice on council services all from one point.

This idea is the first in the country to combine several services under one roof. These facilities will genuinely meet the needs of Salford people.

When will it all happen?

These complex schemes involve several major buildings being constructed across Salford. Planning schemes of this type take a long time. There are three buildings currently underway: Walkden, Eccles and Pendleton, which are due to open late 2008 - early 2008.

Further information regarding the Gateway centres can be found on the SHIFT website.
