Independent mental capacity advocacy
The role of the IMCA is to support some of the most vulnerable members of society, who lack capacity to make important decisions about serious medical treatment, or changes of residence, and the person has no family or friends that it would be appropriate to consult with about the decisions.
An IMCA will support the person who lacks capacity and represent their views to those who are working in best interests. The circumstances when the local authority or NHS body must and may refer to the IMCA service are clarified below.
In Salford, we have commissioned North West Advocacy Services to provide our IMCA service.
