Strategies
Our mission is
"To improve the life chances of Salford citizens and to promote the independence of individuals and communities in Salford"
Our work is directed by national and local government policies, as well as the needs of local communities.
With an ageing population, people living with more complex disabilities and a belief in supporting people in their local communities, social care is changing. We recognise that 'vulnerable people' are often the experts in meeting their own social care needs and in Salford we have a well developed user and carer involvement ethos - which means lots of representation at all levels. We also work very closely with partners in the NHS, in the voluntary sector, private sector and across the city council because we know that your social care needs will be meet by a whole range of different services and organisations.
Over the last few years, there have been some key documents produced which are shaping the way that we provide and develop social care. Two of the most important are:
Our Health, Our Care, Our Say - theDepartment of Health White Paper which sets out the vision for local health and social care services.
Putting People First is an agreement between the Government, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services and others about how social care will be provided in the future.
In Salford, we have been working towards these goals for some time and have strong partnership boards for older people, for people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments, for people with mental health difficulties and for people with learning difficulties. These are the groups that decide the strategic direction of service delivery and there are user and carer representatives on each board. There are also senior staff from Community, Health and Social Care Directorate, the Primary Care Trust, the voluntary sector and other parts of the council.
