Induction
The Common Induction Standards are designed to help new workers provide high quality social care and to prepare them for further learning and assessment in health and social care NVQs. Induction to Skills for Care standards is a requirement for registered care services inspected by CSCI.
All new employees to the organisation should undertake an Induction. The Government sets out service standards and regulations for people who work within the social care sector, this is outlined in the Care Standards Act 2000.
Skills for Care reviewed the expectations with regards to Induction and from September 2006 all new employees into social care work must complete an Induction within the first 12 weeks of their employment based on a 'Common Induction' framework, as it is a vital component of providing safe care and establishing a competent workforce.
It is the managers responsibility to ensure all new staff are inducted to the common inductions standards within the first 12 weeks of employment.
The partnership is able to offer Induction courses for the following services:
Supporting basic communication skills in Induction
Supporting Induction in Social Care (SISCo) recognise that all staff working in social care need to use information and communicate effectively in English. To do this they need:
- Speaking and listening skills
- Reading and writing skills
- Number skills
SISCo offers social care employers help to take action on these skills at induction, through guidance, action plans and tools. The website provides information on what basic skills are; individual and organisational action plans; and a resource for checking basic skills.
Once these skills have been identified during the Induction, further information about learning programmes to develop them is available on the Skills for Life pages.
