Mandatory training
Mandatory training in is an important aspect of an employees work role in social care. The training will enable the employee to work in a safe manner whilst keeping up with current legislation. All mandatory training should take place within the first 12 weeks of employment. Refresher training will take place throughout employment ensuring practices are within current legislation. It is a requirement of the National Minimum Standards that care staff receive statutory training in first aid; food hygiene and moving and handling.
First Aid
First Aid at work is covered by the Health and Safety, First Aid, Regulations 1981. The Health and Safety Executive has more recently, 1997, published a revised Approved Code of Practice, giving practical guidance with respect to the legislation.
In 2007 CSCI updated their guidance in relation to Qualified First Aiders, for more information please see the CSCI website for details.
Food Safety
Organisations have a responsibility to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all employees and service users, so far as it is reasonably practicable. Employees should be trained in food safety and kitchen health and safety good practice so that they present no danger to themselves or others.
Organistions should adhere to the Food Safety Act 1990, the Food Safety General Food Hygiene Regulations 1995 and the Food Safety Temperature Control Regulations 1995.
Food handlers should receive basic food hygiene training, e.g
- Basic Food Hygiene
- Food Safety Level 2
Moving and Handling
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 set out the minimum health and safety requirements for the manual handling of loads where there may be a risk to employees. These regulations apply to movement of any description, of any moveable object, which may be a person, or an inanimate load.
Other documents such as the Health and Safety Executive Guide "Getting to Grips with Manual Handling" (see below) may be used as support to this legislation (e.g. in a court of law). Also relevant is the BackCare document "Guide to the Handling of Patients (1997).
To check whether these courses are available through the partnership please see the CPD training courses list.
