Supervision

Supervision is a way of making it clear what the aims of both the supervisor and person being supervised are, so they can work towards agreed goals in agreed ways.

Effective supervision will ensure organisational, professional and personal goals are achieved within a framework of support and accountability. It is an opportunity to actively focus on achieving a balance between managing workloads and pursuing professional and personal goals.

It is important to have regular supervision meetings with staff, which are recommended to take place on a monthly basis, as this is a way of checking that skills learnt during induction are being practiced correctly, and gives an opportunity to highlight and resolve problems by planning further development opportunities. If the information from supervision is logged, this is then a useful framework for appraisals, and further development for the coming year can be planned against it.

A template form for recording supervision notes based on the Salford City Council model is available below, along with other resources available through the partnership.
