The Government recognised in their 'Options for Excellence' review that the social care workforce will need to start using technology in the way they work. This could be through online or e-learning, and the increased use of ICT equipment in the delivery or organisation of care work.
The review also recommended that employers need to be supported to improve the ICT skills of their workers. This could be from basic level ICT training through to comprehensive training in the use of specific equipment.
The partnership have been involved in various projects looking at ways of using E-learning and ICT effectively within the social care sector in Salford.
As a result of this, we are now able to share some experiences and offer resources to partnership members, including e-learning and ICT courses. So if you would like to introduce ICT into your work or E-learning as a way of meeting and supporting your training needs, you may find the courses and guidance useful in getting ready to e-learn and use ICT.
Some of the successes of our projects include:
- In 2006 members of the E-learning pilot group (pictured above) received a Community, Health and Social Care award in recognition of their use of E-learning and partnership working in order to improve the quality of training and services.
- In 2007 a second group took part in the computer and ICT initiative, and were not only able to make use of the computer and the e-learning packages, but some of them also completed IT courses.
Some of the comments the care staff on the ICT courses made were:
"Through the encouragement of the staff I met at a partnership event, I enrolled on the computer course for beginners. I have really enjoyed the course and I am now looking forward to the intermediate course. The course tutor has been very patient and understanding, not putting us under any pressure when we make a mistake. It is through his enthusiastic approach and tolerance that I am so looking forward to the next course"
"This has been the first chance I have had to do an IT course, which I have found extremely interesting, and I have learnt such a lot over the six weeks"
"I have found the course very good and informative and have learnt a lot. Before the course I didn’t know how to turn on a computer, and now I would like to carry on learning"
"I started this course with a certain amount of trepidation, worried that everybody would have far more skills than me. This however has not been a problem at all as the tutor made it fun and we have all enjoyed learning"
