About e-learning

E-Learning is learning that is supported through the use of information and communication technology i.e. it enables the learner to interact with the materials via CD ROMS, internet websites and email etc and can be used to meet "just in time" objectives by providing training for a specific learning need or issue.

Alternatively, it can be used as part of a blended learning programme, using the e-learning materials to provide underpinning knowledge so that any time spent away from the workplace is kept to a minimum by focusing on more practical elements of the training for instance moving and handling.

As the training can be broken down into bite size chunks and are available 24 hours a day, these can be integrated into the working day and night shifts.

By using E-learning prior to attending ILT it can also provide more classroom time to be spent on activities such as role play, workshops etc, which can allow for different learning styles to be accommodated.

There is some evidence to suggest that because E-learning packages use elements of multimedia (i.e. presenting information via text, graphics, audio or animation) that the individual is more likely to retain what they have learned, and are able to reach competency levels of up to 50 per cent higher than those receiving training via traditional 'classroom' methods.

To get you started in e-learning, Salford Care Training Partnership have purchased licences to two sets of materials that are available via the Internet to all workers in partnership organisations:

  • Ivy software provides online access to the most up-to-date courses on demand.
  • Scils (Social Care Information and Learning Services) is a website containing a range of materials that can be undertaken either on-line or as downloadable workbooks.

To register to use either of these packages, please contact either Gill Doyle on 0161 603 4191 or Jennifer Walsh on 0161 603 4198 at the Staff Development Section.

Please ensure you have your managers permission before accessing these courses in the workplace.
