E-Learning modules can be very flexible in their application, one approach would be to use it as a stand alone process that meets “Just in Time” objectives by directing an employee to a specific E-Learning package where they are able to immediately address a learning need around a particular project or issue that they may be involved in.
Alternatively, E-Learning can be also used as part of a blended learning programme. For example, by undertaking modules prior to attending an instructor led training (ILT) course, participants are equipped with underpinning knowledge, or they may have used the materials to refresh knowledge thereby reducing the classroom time needed which will reduce costs and time away from the workplace.
By using E-Learning prior to attending ILT it can also provide more classroom time to be spent on activities such as role play, workshops etc, which can allow for different learning styles to be accommodated.
There is some evidence to suggest that because E-Learning packages use elements of multimedia (i.e. presenting information via text, graphics, audio or animation) that the individual is more likely to retain what they have learned and are able to reach competency levels up to 50 per cent higher than those receiving training via ILT .
In order to get you started with E-Learning, the Salford Care Training Partnership have purchased licenses to two sets of materials that are available via the Internet to all workers within the partnership:
