E-Learning requirements
What specification does my computer need?
It is generally accepted that if the PC (Word 19KB) being used for E-Learning is not up to specification, it can lead to individuals feeling frustrated when their learning is impeded by the quality of the technology. Therefore it is recommended the the PC has a fast enough processor (Word 19 KB) and sufficient memory (Word 19 KB) size to meet the requirements of E-Learning software.(Word 20 kb).
As most software providers courses are available via the Internet, it is important that the PC has a broadband (Word 19 kb) connection, that will enable the materials to be downloaded (Word 19 kb) at a speed that is responsive to the learner.
The majority of e-learning training materials also provide information via audio as well as on screen therefore to maximise the learning experience, a PC should have a soundcard (Word 20 kb) facility with headphones.
Appropriate siting of equipment
It is important that a workstation that is to be used for E-Learning purposes is situated appropriately. Because E-Learning requires a high level of concentration, ideally this should be separate from the general office environment, where interruptions are likely.
We are aware that for many organisations this can be difficult due to limited space, therefore if this is the case, you might wish to consider booking out the office for E-Learning when it is not in use i.e. at the beginning or end of the day/outside of office hours.
It is also recommended that a VDU risk assessment is undertaken in relation to:
- Chair construction and adjustment
- Display screen image, controls and adjustment
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Workstation position, desktop and environment
- Postural issues such as leg space, arm and wrist postion, head position and body position.
- Environmental issues such as adequate lighting, temperature, ventilation and noise
There is an E-Learning module that will provide training in this area with the facility to undertake a risk assessment and record results. VDU Risk Assessment (Word 25 kb)
