ICT options for social care
The Options for Excellence review identified that the social care workforce will need to adapt to meet the requirements of the 'Our health, our care, our say' White Paper through adopting new ways of working. One of these new ways of working is the use of technology in social care.
The recommendations of the review to further progress the use and addition of technology into social care include:
- Distribution of the results of the 'E-Readiness in the Social Care Sector' research carried out by the Social Care Institute for Excellence
- Encouraging the inclusion of ICT training into a greater range of training and development opportunities
- Skills for Care and Childrens Workforce Development Council to include skills in using assistive technology within National Occupational Standards (NOS) to promote innovative ways of meeting service users needs.
- Support employers to invest in improved ICT structures including broadband access and equipment such as laptops and PDAs (see Skills for Care ICT Resources questionnaire and e-learning guidance)
- Develop the use of ICT to promote continuing professional development, including e-learning and other interactive learning programs
- Support employers to improve the ICT skills of their workers, whether this be a basic level of ICT training or comprehensive training in the use of specific equipment and resources.
To support these recommendations of the review, a number of possible uses for ICT in social care have been identified for the development of the courses the partnership can offer.
One of the advantages of these packages for partnership members, is that tutors from Business Ventures-Eccles College have designed the ICT courses to be specifically tailored to meet the needs of staff in social care work. They have also been developed to support all levels of learners, from beginners to those wanting an ICT qualification.
