Skills for Life

What is Skills for Life?

A Government initiative set up to assist adults in England to benefit from training resources and increase their skills (sometimes called basic or essential skills) in order to be confident and responsive to change in a way that can improve their lives.

What are Skills for Life?

Literacy - reading, writing, speaking and listening skills which underpin good communication

Numeracy - number and measuring skills which underpin accuracy and quality

English speakers of other languages (ESOL) - who need to brush up on their spoken or written English which underpins communication and participation

Why does Skills for Life matter?

People with Skills for Life gaps may find it difficult to take opportunities for promotion; undertake new ways of learning to update skills; read and understand written information; complete forms, reports and emails accurately and well or understand signs, lables, charts etc which may lead to health and safety issues. All of these can impact on individual work and home lives, and the effectiveness of the business.

Skills for Life levels

Skills for Life learning and qualifications can be taken in either Adult Literacy or Adult Numeracy.

  • Level 1 qualifications are equivalent to GCSE's grade D to G
  • Level 2 qualifications are quivalent to GCSE's grade A* to C.
