Home security
The city council works to help residents to be and feel secure in their homes. Our Housing Crime Reduction team, part of Housing Connections Partnership:
- gives advice on crime prevention
- provides security packages to households referred by the police
- carries out neighbourhood security schemes
Advice
We have created an information pack called A guide to securing your home, which is for residents to explain the ways you can reduce the risk of your home being burgled.
Individual packages
Assistance is given to burglary victims referred to us by Greater Manchester Police. As properties that have been burgled are more likely to get burgled again and thieves will often return to a home where they have been previously successful, these properties are considered to be in greatest need.
Over the past two years the city council has secured more than 3,000 homes across the city by providing packages to people who are most vulnerable against burglaries. These packages have included door locks, window locks, door viewers chains, window grilles, burglar alarms and security lights.
Neighbourhood schemes
This year we are aiming to complete larger projects in four selected areas including fencing schemes, street lighting, target hardening works and environmental works like cutting back hedges and cleaning graffiti.
Alleygating is one of our most successful initiatives. Is there any alleyway behind your home? Installing gates to restrict access only to residents has proved to be an extremely successful way of reducing both crime and fear of crime. Find out more about the Salford alleygating scheme.
