Supported Tenancies

Housing Connections Partnership runs a supported tenancies scheme, which offers young people the opportunity to receive individual support, when setting up home for the first time.

The service is provided to people renting a furnished or unfurnished flat (as above). Each new tenant is given a support worker who visits him or her on a regular basis, during the first few months of their tenancy.

Advice is offered on areas such as budgeting, sorting benefits, negotiating with fuel providers and understanding the rights and responsibilities of being a tenant.

Assistance with deposits for private rented accommodation

Help with deposits - rental bond scheme

In some areas of the city we can offer a rental bond if you are offered private rented property but do not have the money to pay the deposit.

The bonds are available to young people in housing need in receipt of a low income or on benefits, who have found self contained private rented property, for which the landlord is willing to accept a bond and not a cash deposit.

If you need to apply for a bond, both you and the landlord need to fill in some forms. These can be obtained by telephoning 0161 793 2020. Generally bonds are only available to people over 18 years of age unless you are referred by Social Services.

Emergency accommodation for young people

Short term hostels

The council is able to provide emergency accommodation to homeless young people.

If you are homeless, you should contact Housing Advice and Support Services on 0161 793 2020 between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

If you have nowhere to stay that night, you should go along to Crompton House, 100 Chorley Road, Swinton, Salford, M27 6ES, where a duty officer will interview you and assess your needs. The duty officer will then determine whether Salford City Council has a duty to provide temporary accomodation for you within one of the hostels or supported accommodation schemes within the city.  This will be dependent on your current circumstances and whether Salford City Council has a homelessness duty towards you. See web page 'What to do if you're homeless' for further information.

Staff are available to help young people move into and stay in these hostels and then help them find appropriate long-term accommodation and move into it.

If you find that you have nowhere to stay that night, after 4.30pm you should contact the Emergency Out of Hours Duty Team on 0161 794 8888.

If you are homeless and do not want to move into a hostel, you should still seek help from Housing Advice and Support Services or lettings service Salford Home Search, as you will be able to get advice on all the options which are open to you.

Supported accommodation for young single people

You may feel that you do not have the necessary skills and abilities to live alone, without support, in your own flat. For young people in your situation, particularly those who have been homeless, the council offers accommodation at Petrie Court in Pendleton.

Petrie Court offers 16 self-contained flats, and access to staff 24 hours a day.

During the time young people live at Petrie Court, which is normally about four to six months, residents are helped to develop the skills they need for them to be able to move on, hopefully to their own flat.

Support is also provided for a period of time after the young person has moved into their own accommodation.  The project officer based at Petrie Court will help with practical issues concerned with moving into the new tenancy, and will also provide emotional support as required, by carrying out regular visits and by giving advice regarding other related services.

Young people are normally referred to Petrie Court by agencies. For more information, please contact 0161 793 2020.

Housing advice for young people

Housing Advice and Support Services can provide advice to young people on a range of housing issues including:

  • How to find accommodation
  • What benefits to claim
  • Problems with landlords

Housing advice can be obtained over the telephone by calling 0161 793 2020.
