What do I do if I have nowhere to live?

You have the right to receive advice and information from the council to help you find accommodation.

If you are homeless today you can go to the Housing Advice and Support Services team and request a homelessness interview. An officer will interview you on the same day.

You will be asked detailed questions about your circumstances. This is to enable us to determine whether you have a priority need and whether the council has a duty to provide you with a home.

You may be in priority need if you:

  • are pregnant
  • have dependent children living with you
  • are over 60 years of age
  • are unable to find you own house because you are ill or disabled
  • are homeless because of a fire or flood
  • are 16 or 17 years old
  • are leaving an institution such as the armed forces or prison

You will be asked to provide proof of your circumstances and this information will be recorded and used to decide the help the council can give you.

If you are in priority need with nowhere to go, one of our officers will find you temporary accommodation so that you will have a place to stay whilst the council complete their investigation.

Once your assessment has been completed, the council will provide you with a notice of their decision. If the council has accepted duty, you will be given priority for a new home.

What if I am not in priority need?

If you are not in priority need the council will still be able to offer you help in finding accommodation or finding housing in the private sector. The council cannot provide emergency accommodation, but can provide a list of hostels and bed and breakfast accommodation.

I have been given notice to leave my home?

You can call or visit the Housing Advice and Support Services team where an appointment will be made for you within 3–5 working days. An officer will complete a homelessness assessment form with you. You may also wish to telephone the council’s Housing Advice service, which runs a telephone advice line every weekday on 0161 793 2020 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm.

The advice officer will help you to defend your right to stay in your home and will offer homelessness advice to you.

You can contact the Housing Advice and Support Services team on 0161 793 2020 or you can email housing.advicecentre@salford.gov.uk
