Chapel Street

The Chapel Street Corridor stretches from Salford University along the A6 to Manchester, including the areas of Islington, Trinity & Greengate.

Key to the regeneration of the area will be to attract economic growth and to create a balanced mix of housing type and tenure with the aim of repopulating and making the area more sustainable.

With the formation of Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company (URC) which was given Government approval on February 1st 2005, a new draft Vision and Regeneration framework has been developed with a team of internationally acclaimed regeneration experts and architects. The Chapel Street area will be a priority for the URC and we will ensure that our work in the area will support and compliment the URC framework.

The URC is an independent company that has brought together the city council, the North West Regional Development Agency and English Partnerships who, with existing regeneration partnerships and the private sector, will drive the renewal. A partnership with the English Cities Fund has been created to progress the regeneration of the area.

For more information on the framework visit the Central Salford URC website.

Affordable housing

We have been working closely with our RSL partners, Contour and Irwell Valley Housing Association to bring forward new affordable houses and apartments within the area.

Irwell Valley Housing Association completed a development of six shared ownership houses on the former Carolina House site off Anaconda Drive in 2006 selling to first time buyers.

Work has been completed on the site of the Broughton Tavern, with the development of 57 apartments, at Richmond Hill  the majority of which will be for shared ownership. The launch of the scheme attracted major interest with 339 enquiries, 22 already reserved off plan to first time buyers via shared ownership of which approximately one third from within Salford.

We will continue to work with and develop further options to increase the level of affordable housing within the Chapel Street area, for both existing residents and to attract new residents into the area.
