The Lower Kersal and Charlestown area of Salford is being transformed through a  flagship £53m, 10 year regeneration programme. The New Deal for Communities (NDC) programme covers six themes:

The NDC area is one of the key regeneration areas within Central Salford. It is extremely well located being next to Salford University and the Pendleton district shopping centre, both of which have ambitious plans for growth and renewal. It is also 10 minutes away from both Manchester city centre and Salford Quays. It is unique within Central Salford, having both a bustling urban centre which sits alongside significant areas of woodlands, riverside walks and high quality green spaces.

The New Deal Team is working with the local community to build upon the area’s unique assets so that it can play a key role in Salford’s renaissance, becoming a location of choice within Greater Manchester for residents, students and businesses alike.

Since the start of the NDC programme in 2001, significant progress has been made. The most important achievement was the launch of the Development Framework in 2004 which provides the long term vision for the transformation of the area. The Development Framework sets out the aspirations of the city council, its partners, and the local community to bring about a change that is both ambitious and sustainable.

A number of high profile projects have been completed or are well underway. One of the most important  achievements has been the appointment of a developer partner consortium, Miller Homes and Inspired Developments to develop up to 2,500 new homes in the area over a number of years. December 2006 saw the granting of planning permission for the exciting first phase at Kersal Heights now known as Unity Quarter launched in March 2008 , and 2007 also saw the start of the masterplanning for the dramatic riverside sites in Charlestown and Lower Kersal. Two new Healthy Living Centres have also been completed, as well as the acclaimed Sports Village which is a unique resource for the whole of the city.

In Bloom winnersAs well as bringing about physical change, the programme also aims to improve the health of the local community, improve access to training and employment opportunities, and reduce crime and anti social behaviour. The NDC Team works closely with colleagues in the city council, partner agencies and a network of well established community groups to make sure that the area can become a prosperous and thriving part of Salford.
