Consultation for Selective Licensing in Broughton
Further to the implementation of the Selective Licensing Scheme in Seedley and Langworthy on the 25 May 2007, the Broughton Ward has been proposed as the next designated area in which the local authority are proposing to introduce the Scheme.
Selective Licensing requires Landlords of privately rented properties to apply to the authority for a licence. The licensing process ensures landlords are fit and proper and that they manage their properties effectively, including ensuring that they take action against tenants who are perpetrating anti-social behaviour.
Selective Licensing will benefit the community by:
- reducing ant-social behaviour
- improving property management in the private rented sector
- helping to halt area decline and raise standards in the community
- improving housing standards for private tenants
- ensuring landlords are aware of their role in creating and maintaining thriving, sustainable communities
Landlords will be commiting a criminal offence if found operating without a licence and if found guilty may face a fine of up to £20,000.
Consultation will begin with the Broughton community in November with the Landlord Licensing Team holding a roadshow event at two seperate venues in the area in order to give further information and answer any question's about Selective Licensing.
Further consultation will also include a number of questionnaires being sent out to local residents, landlords, managing agents, tenants and local businesses. The questionnaires will ask about experiences and views of those people who will be affected by the scheme and if licensing of landlords will help improve the neighbourhood.
