Childhood Disability

Salford Families Project offers a range of services for children with a disability and their families. We can help children from birth until they are 18 years old. Our services include social work, playschemes, group leisure activities, short breaks, a toy library and specialist playrooms. We also support the family and have services for parents and brothers and sisters. We are run by both Community & Social Services and Barnardos.

When parents first realise their child may have a disability, it can be the most difficult time in their lives. As their child grows older, parents can come to terms with the sense of shock and loss and share the satisfaction of all parents in helping their child achieve his or her potential.

Most parents continue to value support services which help them to cope with the range of emotional and practical difficulties which they may experience.

Social Work Service

We are a team of experienced social workers who will work directly with families, usually on a long-term basis. We will discuss with you what you feel your needs are, provide support when things get tough and give you information, advice, useful services and financial benefits.

Playschemes

We run a number of summer playschemes for children of different ages and abilities. We also arrange activities for smaller groups of children during other school holidays.

Group leisure activities

All year round activities at weekends and in the evenings.

Practical support

Family Support & Play Workers work directly with disabled children, either in the home, or more often, taking them out for a few hours. This gives the child new experiences and the family a break.

Short breaks

This can give disabled children and their families some time off from each other, when things are getting tough. Breaks could be a few hours or nights and children can stay with another family or in a small residential home.

Groups

These are arranged for parents, brothers and sisters or the disabled young people themselves. We also link individual parents with each other on an informal basis when requested.

Volunteers

We use approved volunteers to run group leisure activities and playschemes and some young people who use our services can also become volunteers.

Newsletter

We send out a regular newsletter to all our service users. This is produced by staff, parents and other family members.

Within the Project’s building, we also have:

Playspace

We have three playspaces in the building - a soft playroom with ballpool; a sensory stimulation room and a general playroom leading onto an outdoor safety surface and lawn.

Toy library

We have over 100 toys that you can borrow for up to four weeks

Information room

We have videos, leaflets and books giving information about most childhood conditions and support groups that you can join.

You can also call our Information Line on  0161 707 0222, which is open Monday to Friday between 1pm and 5pm.

Does it cost?

Most of our services are free, although some of the activities that we organise for children and families do have a cost. We will talk to you before booking any activities, to make sure that the activities are within what you can afford.
