Air quality monitoring
Salford City Council has a long history of monitoring air pollution. Today this monitoring activity can be split into two distinct categories:
Air pollution monitoring is a fundamental part of local air quality management and the data is used for Air Quality Review and Assessments undertaken by Salford City Council.
Automatic monitoringAutomatic monitoring involves the use of monitoring instruments capable of giving almost real-time concentrations of pollutants. The instruments run continuously, recording the concentration of the pollutant it is measuring and storing the results in its memory.
Salford has three automatic monitoring stations, located in Broughton, Eccles and Worsley. Real time monitoirng information form the Eccles and Worsley sites are available from the MAPAC web site. The automatic monitoring stations are equipped to monitor for:
- Ozone
- Sulphur Dioxide
- Nitrogen Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxide and Oxides of Nitrogen
- Carbon Monoxide
- Particles
- Benzene, Toluene and Xylene (Worsley only)
Non-automatic monitoringNon-automatic monitoring is less sophisticated and can not give real time results. Salford City Council has a non-automatic monitoring network using Nitrogen Dioxide Passive Diffusion Tubes (small plastic tubes which detect levels of one pollutant only). The diffusion tubes are placed at sampling locations across the whole city, providing a good picture of the spatial distribution of Nitrogen Dioxide across the city.
