The air quality action plan for Greater Manchester

What is an air quality action plan?

Once an air quality management area has been declared the council must develop an action plan which sets out how the air quality objectives will be met. An introduction to air quality management areas (AQMA) in Salford is available.

Does Salford have an air quality action plan?

All of the Greater Manchester authorities have declared AQMAs. They have worked together to produce an air quality action plan which covers the whole of Greater Manchester.

The Greater Manchester Air Quality Action Plan is made up of two parts. The first part details the actions that will be taken across the Greater Manchester area and summarises how the plan will be evaluated. Each of the ten authorities has also produced a local annex setting out what they intend to do within their own area.

How will progress on implementing the air quality action plan be reported?

Salford City Council will produce an annual air quality progress report, which will outline progress with implementing actions set out in the air quality action plan. The progress report will also contain the following information:

  • New air quality monitoring results
  • New local developments affecting air quality
  • Local air quality strategy
  • Planning and policies affecting air quality
  • Local transport plans and strategies affecting air quality

The first air quality progress report for Salford is due in 2005 and will be available on this website.
