Greenspaces user needs survey

Salford City Council recognises the importance of open space to the quality of life of local people. Officers are currently preparing a strategy for the city that will seek to ensure that everyone has good access to high quality greenspaces of all types.

Major consultation took place last year on the appropriate standards for, and location of, outdoor play areas, parks and sports facilities.

The city council is now carrying out an audit and assessment of the existing provision and demand for all of the other types of green spaces in Salford. These wider green space sites will be considered regardless of ownership or level of public access and will cover a wide variety of functions and characteristics. The type of sites which are now being considered include:

  • Country Parks & Local Nature Reserves
  • Woodlands
  • Rivers/Canals & Lakes/Reservoirs/Ponds
  • Looplines (created along the dismantled railway lines
  • Golf courses
  • Cemeteries
  • Allotments
  • Informal/natural green space areas within the built environment

Part of this process involved a user survey to understand what sites are particularly valued, whether there are enough of these wider green spaces in the right places and how they should be managed. We also consider it is important to find out who is not using the city’s wider green spaces and why.

The responses from the user survey that was completed during August and September 2005 are now available. The analysis of these results will be completed to form part of the 'Assessment of Needs' section of the draft greenspace strategy and will be available during the full public consultation. The detailed comments that were made during the user survey do not form part of the current results but will also be considered before the public consultation.
