Dropped Kerbs: Vehicular Access to Properties

Any access onto a public highway from a residential or commercial driveway should have a 'dropped kerb'.

Do I need a dropped kerb?
If you intend to drive a vehicle over the footway into your driveway off a road, then you will need a dropped kerb. It is an offence to drive over a footway without proper dropped kerbs.

Who undertakes the work?
Urban Vision no longer provide estimates or quotations for work in respect to domestic vehicular access crossings and we no longer organise or directly employ contractors to do the work.

Applicants wishing to have a domestic vehicular crossing constructed must therefore employ their own suitably qualified and accredited contractor, with both applicant and contractor being made aware of and compliant with the terms and conditions set down.

All contractual arrangements shall be made between applicant and contractor alone. The highway outside the applicant's property remains under the control of the Highway Authority and as such you and your contractor must comply with the terms and conditions.

I don't have a dropped kerb for my access!
If you do not have dropped kerbs, you must not drive over the footway. If you do so, you are breaking the law. We could take enforcement action to prevent such usage, if necessary. You may also be liable for any damage to the surface of the footway caused by your vehicle. You may have to defend yourself against a claim should someone have an accident caused by any damage resulting from your unauthorised usage, and be faced with a bill for the repair of any sub-surface services that become damaged as a result of such usage.

Do I need planning permission for a dropped kerb?
Planning permission is only needed for dropped kerbs if the access is on a road designated as a classified main road (i.e. A, B or C Roads). Please contact us for further guidance.
