Road safety

What is the problem in Salford?

In 2005 84 people were killed or seriously injured on Salford's roads and of these 13 were children. In the four years between 2002-2005 statistics show that 354 people have been killed or seriously injured (KSI). In general terms: 80% were adults, 20% were children, 72% were male, 28% were female, 38% were pedestrians, 8% were cyclists, 17% were motorcyclists and 34% were motor vehicle occupants.

National targets set in 2000 require that road casualties are reduced to the following levels by 2010.

  • Child casualties - 50%
  • Other casualties - 40%
  • 10% reduction in "slight" casualties

What is being done?

Reducing road casualties is being tackled through a combination of engineering, education and enforcement (the 3Es). The Road Safety team primarily has responsibility for the road safety education, road safety training and road safety publicity.

Road safety however, is the responsibility of every road user; whether you are a driver, rider, passenger, pedestrian or professional driver. When you are out on the road always THINK! Road Safety
