Travel plans

A travel plan is a way of managing how employees or pupils travel to a particular organisation or school. It may consist of a single initiative, such as car sharing or may use a coordinated package of measures to encourage different ways of travelling.

To meet the transport needs of the staff and to provide healthier, more sustainable transport options, a travel plan is being developed by Salford City Council following the appointment of a Travel Plan Coordinator.

The main objectives of our plan will be to encourage our staff to use alternative modes of transport to the car, for example public transport, wherever possible, thereby providing an example of good practice to local businesses and organisations within Salford.

Would you like some help developing your own travel plan?Travel Plans have captured the attention and imagination of some of the most prominent companies in Greater Manchester such as Manchester Airport, RAC and the Royal Mail, and some of the smallest, such as those at Houldsworth Mill. These employers have realised the benefits that having a Travel Plan can bring.

Salford City Council's Travel Plan Coordinator can assist in introducing Travel Plans into the majority of businesses and schools within our own city area. We are able to offer support and assistance in the development of a Travel Plan and provide you with professional guidance in implementing, launching and evaluating the success of a Travel Plan.

Travel Plan initiatives will necessarily be unique to each organisation. As a guide they can include:

  • Promoting the use of public transport, walking and cycling
  • Introducing alternative work practices, including working from home and compressed working weeks
  • Managing use of cars by reducing the demand for, and use of, car parking spaces; encouraging car sharing and considering how employees travel on business and how children travel to school
