"Smiley SID" is here!
A new tool is available to encourage drivers to slow down around schools. Smiley SID is a Speed Indication Device which displays either a happy or sad face depending on how fast the vehicle is travelling.
It is designed to give a friendly reminder to drivers to check their speed in the vicinity of schools and is an ideal way to teach children about the dangers that exist as they travel to and from school and in their neighbourhood.
It is available for loan to all schools in Salford.
Seatbelt Campaign
This campaign is carried out on a regular basis in the attempt to get people to wear their seatbelts.
It involves stopping any vehicle with unrestrained occupants and offering the choice of taking a £30 fine or attending a 30 minute hard-hitting presentation delivered by firefighters who have to deal with the aftermath of car collisions.
The aim of the campaign is to educate rather than prosecute.
The presentation has been well recieved by those who have chosen to attend. Over 80% of those surveyed have stated that they will now change their habits after seeing the content of the presentation and listening to the firefighters tell their stories.
Unfortunately there seems to be a similar number of vehicles stopped at each event.
New Child Seat Law
New child seat and seat belt laws which could save up to 2,000 child casualties per year will come into force on 18 September 2006.
The new law means that drivers need to ensure that all children up to 135cm are in an appropriate restraint.

Motorcycle Awareness
Motorists are being urged to look out for bikers as part of a new campaign to reduce the number of motorcycle casualties on Salford's roads. Statistics show that a significant number of these collisions are happening because drivers are failing to see motorcyclists, particularly at junctions and it's often the driver-rather than the biker who is at fault. This kind of collision is known as a SMIDSY- Sorry Mate I Didn't See You!
Big, bold and bright temporary signs carrying the message "THINK BIKE" are being displayed along major routes at motorcycle collision hotspots to remind drivers to look out for bikers. Other signs being displayed which read "......TO DIE FOR?" designed to inform and warn motorbike riders to take extra care along these routes and, in particular to watch out for cars pulling out at junctions.
The campaign coincides with a national TV and radio campaign, which urges urban car drivers to take a longer look for bikes before pulling out. The adverts reveal that every year an estimated 1500 motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured because drivers look but don't see.
The signs are visible on the following routes:
Liverpool Rd - Irlam
Leigh Rd/Simpson Road - Boothstown
Worsley Brow - Worsley
Regent Road - Salford
A6 Manchester Rd - Little Hulton
A666 - Clifton/Pendlebury
Cadishead Way - Irlam
