Salford City Council's Travel Plan

Background

Salford City Council is aiming to meet the transport needs of our staff and councillors, the users of our services, local residents and visitors to the city. Our travel plan recognises the important role the council plays in providing both healthier and more sustainable transport options.

The travel plan aims at promoting travel choices and reducing our reliance on the car. We will do this through specific initiatives that can reduce the impact of travel and transport on the environment. To achieve this we will provide a number of incentives to our staff as well as changing the way we do business.

This travel plan will grow and develop with the changing circumstances of the organisation and the environment in which we work.

This is just the start of a better way of living and working, a process of evolution not revolution.

Achievements to the present date:

  • Covered cycle shelters have been provided at Salford Civic Centre
  • A car sharing scheme was re-launched for staff in summer 2006 called carsharegm
  • Public transport timetable information is available for staff and visitors at Salford Civic Centre
  • We have involved staff in walking initiative 'Watch your step'
  • Regular health walks are organised by the council
  • Developing a network of safe cycle routes
  • Provide secure parking facilities for cycles
  • Council vehicles have been converted to environmentally friendly fuels
  • Questionnaires sent out to staff members for them to have a say in the travel plan
