Air quality

The council is required to carry out assessments of local air pollutant levels and the results are compared against national health-based air quality objectives.
The predicted rise of 200,000 extra cars in the next five years in Greater Manchester, will limit progress towards pollution targets. Cars are currently contributing 24% of total UK carbon dioxide emissions, with this expected to rise by a further 9% by 2010.
Road transport is the most significant source of air pollution in the Greater Manchester area, with 68% of nitrogen dioxide emissions coming from vehicles.
