Our vision of Salford is that of a city where all people can enjoy living, growing and working together.

'In 2016, Salford will be a beautiful and welcoming city, driven by energetic and engaged communities of highly skilled, healthy and motivated citizens, who have built a diverse and prosperous culture and economy which encourages and recognises the contribution of everyone, for everyone.'

Our values will provide the beliefs behind the actions of the Partners IN Salford where everyone will:

Respect and value our diverse communities

Be open and honest

Respect equality and fairness

What is community cohesion?

Community cohesion is about equality and inclusivity, having a common vision and a sense of belonging for everyone. Valuing diversity and ensuring people from different backgrounds have the same life opportunities. It is also about developing positive relationships between people from different backgrounds and circumstances, in schools, the workplace and neighbourhoods. Community cohesion is closely linked to integration and aims to build communities and neighbourhoods where people feel they belong and can mix and interact with others particularly with people from different racial backgrounds and faiths.

Community cohesion in Salford

Community cohesion in Salford means that you feel comfortable and positive about living and working alongside your neighbours, wherever they come from or whatever their background, beliefs, family history or lifestyle.

It is about:

Building community links

Bringing communities together

Overcoming prejudice and suspicion

Combating discrimination

Promoting opportunities for all

Listening to all voices in a community

Addressing community tensions

Celebrating the different cultures within a community

Understanding, valuing and sharing community differences

Giving young people a voice

In Salford community cohesion incorporates and goes beyond the ideas of race equality and tackling discrimination. It is about the relationships within and between communities.

We define a cohesive community as a place where:

  • There is a common vision and a sense of belonging;
  • The diversity of peoples’ backgrounds and circumstances are appreciated
  • Those from different backgrounds have equal opportunities
  • Strong and positive relationships have been developed between people from different backgrounds in the workplace, in schools and in neighbourhoods

What are we trying to achieve?

  • To develop a better understanding of the issues and the causes of problems in local areas
  • The building of stronger links and understanding between different communities and cultures
  • To promote respect for others, tolerance of racial differences and also respond strongly and consistently to racist incidents and any activity calculated to destabilise communities or cause offence

To develop an approach to policy and resources which is understood by all communities and which do not lead to tensions and segregation
