Greater Manchester Police 2007 review

Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan looks back on a successful 2007
2007 saw many successes for the Salford division of Greater Manchester Police and the Salford Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, with significant reductions made in key crimes and stronger links made with all our communities through neighbourhood policing, resulting in a drop in overall crime of 16%.
No one agency can tackle crime on their own and we work closely with partners such as Salford City Council.
The year got off to a good start when officers reduced vehicle crime by 72% in the Clifton and Clifton Green areas throughout January and February.
This success was down to Operation Crusher, which involved Greater Manchester Police (GMP)’s Tactical Vehicle Crime Unit using automatic number plate recognition to target vehicle crime hotspots.
In relation to burglary, Operation Plunder was one of the most successful initiatives the division has ever run. The crackdown reduced burglary by 46% and led to 30 arrests.
Anti-social behaviour has also fallen during 2007, and we now have 96 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to help tackle the problem. They work with police officers as part of our dedicated neighbourhood policing teams, and maintain a high visibility presence throughout the city. By doing so, they not only help to reduce crime, but also raise confidence.
Other measures that helped reduce anti-social behaviour included the Dispersal Order implemented in Irlam Locks in late February and a crackdown on off-road bikes in Lower Kersal and Broughton during April. Six vehicles were seized in just three days. At the end of June, young people in Winton and Eccles were also encouraged to take part in a youth sports event at Winton Park. The event was organised by GMP and Salford City Reds, aiming to get young people off the streetsand into organised sport.
Another highlight for the division came in April, when police charged four people after a crackdown on gun crime in the city. Officers working with trading standards also seized counterfeit goods worth over £250,000 after carrying out a raid on Salford market in June.
In addition, I am delighted to announce that Salford Police has joined forces with Salford City Radio to spread the word about its crime-fighting initiatives. The ‘Crime Time’ show is broadcast every Friday from 11am to 12 noon on 94.4 FM.
In our fight against crime we work with our partners and the community. There is still much to do, but the people of Salford should be reassured that we are working hard to make the streets of this vibrant city safer everyday.
It is important that everyone in our community plays a part in fighting crime and disorder. We rely on your information to fight crime and bring criminals to justice.
